- Sour cream ~ Plain Greek yogurt can be used as a substitute. I recommend the whole milk version for a rich flavor, but low fat or nonfat yogurt are also options.
- Mayonnaise ~ Regular mayonnaise is my preference for this flavorful dip. Olive oil mayonnaise, avocado mayonnaise or light mayo are alternatives.
- Dried dill ~ I like to use dried herbs in dips as I always have them on hand. 2 tablespoons of finely chopped fresh dill can be used as a substitute.
- Garlic powder
- Onions powder
- Kosher salt ~ The larger grain salt enhances the flavor of food without making it overly salty.
- Fresh ground black pepper ~ Use a pepper mill to grind the pepper. Fresh ground pepper from peppercorns results in the most flavorful spice.

I don't recommend freezing homemade dill dip. The sour cream changes in texture when thawed. The dip may also be watery and separate.
expert tip
For the best flavor, let the dip sit in the refrigerator for at least 30 minutes before serving. The longer it's refrigerated, the more intense the flavor will be. Be sure to taste the dip before serving and season to taste.
