Cuban sandwich appetizer skewers with ham, Swiss cheese, salami and dill pickle.

Happy hour is one of my favorite hours of the day. Some of my favorite nibbles to have with a glass of wine are BLT Bites, Super Easy Antipasto Skewers, Spicy Deviled Eggs with Jalapenos, and these mini Cuban sandwich appetizers on a skewer.

The flavors are a party on a stick! Nutty Swiss cheese, smoky ham with spicy mustard, salty salami and a dilly briny mini pickle are the perfect snack to go along with your favorite cocktail.

what are Cuban sandwich appetizer skewers?

Cuban sandwiches, like my Instant Pot Cuban Sandwich version, are made with double the pork (tender shredded pork and salty deli ham), mild slightly sweet and nutty Swiss cheese, dilly pickles, and spicy Dijon mustard.

They're pressed on airy ciabatta bread until crunchy and the cheese is a melty goodness. These Cuban Sandwich Appetizer Skewers have all the flavors of the traditional sandwich in a streamlined mini snack. This is one of my favorite ham appetizers.

ingredients

These appetizers are a breeze to make and are always a crowd favorite. With just a few ingredients, they take just minutes to make. And best of all, they can be made in advance ~ up to 24 hours!

Ham slices, Swiss cheese, salami, dill pickles, mustard on a marble counter.
  • Swiss cheese
  • Ham
  • Salami
  • Baby dill pickles
  • Spicy Dijon mustard
  • 4 inch toothpicks ~ Try these fancy toothpicks.

how to make appetizer skewers

Strips of ham spread with mustard with small pickles and cheese cubes.
A toothpick with a cheese cube, ham roll up, salami roll up and a small pickle.
  • Prep the ingredients ~ Cube the Swiss cheese. Cut the ham slices into strips and spread with mustard. Roll up the ham strips. Fold the salami slices in quarters.
  • Thread the ingredients ~ On each toothpick, skewer a cheese cube, a ham roll up, a piece of salami folded in quarters, and a dill pickle.
  • Store in the refrigerator ~ Either cover the Cuban sandwich skewers with plastic wrap or store in an airtight container like these glass storage dishes. Store in the refrigerator for up to 24 hours.

chef tips for making appetizer skewers

  • Prep the ingredients ~ For easy skewering, have all the ingredients prepped in advance. Cut the Swiss cheese in about ¾ inch cubes. Slice the ham into strips, spread with a little mustard, and roll up. Fold the salami slices into quarters.
  • Use deli ham ~ A smoky tavern ham is my go-to for this recipe. Other options are honey glazed, Virginia ham, maple glazed, or pepper ham.
  • Choose the skewers wisely ~ 4 inch toothpicks are ideal for Cuban Sandwich Appetizer Skewers. Anything shorter and the ingredients will not on the stick.

What a fun idea and the perfect appetizer for all my gluten free friends. I love the combination of meats in a Cuban sandwich and they work together on a stick too.

What a unique twist to the traditional Cubano sandwich. I made these to serve on Sunday at brunch and people thought the idea of a Cuban sandwich on a skewer was genius. It was a hit.
