roast beef crostini with horseradish cream

Roast Beef Crostini with Horseradish Cream is an easy to make appetizer that feel a little bit fancy. Thin slices of deli roast beef top toasty crostini along with a tangy horseradish cream, arugula, a sprinkle of Gruyere cheese and diced tomatoes. They are perfect for your next party and are SO GOOD!

crostini topped with roast beef

Roast Beef Crostini are a favorite appetizer recipe! I recently made them for a holiday cocktail party as a group of neighborhood friends gathered to kickoff the Christmas season. My big tray of these 2 bite roast beef appetizers were a hit! They were gobbled up in no time at all.

Crispy yet soft crostini is topped with a tangy horseradish cream, peppery arugula, thin slices of roast beef, nutty Gruyere cheese and bright red tomato. The combination of flavors is DELICIOUS!

the ingredients for roast beef crostini

  • a long baguette or skinny loaf of bread
  • extra virgin olive oil
  • kosher salt
  • sour cream
  • mayonnaise
  • prepared horseradish ~ Available at the grocery store and usually in the condiment aisle. It's a jar of grated horseradish, vinegar and salt.
  • arugula ~ A leafy green with a peppery taste.
  • deli roast beef
  • shredded Gruyere cheese
  • diced tomato

How to make crostini

I struck upon the perfect crostini recipe while sipping wine and nibbling on appetizers at my friend Linda's home. She has the perfect crostini as it's slightly crisp and just a little soft. It is ideal accompaniment to my basil hummus, pimento cheese, creamy New England Clam chowder, and these roast beef crostini.

Crostini in a cast iron skillet.

Here's the crostini details:

  • Cut a long thin loaf of bread into ½ inch slices.
  • Brush with extra virgin olive oil and sprinkle with kosher salt.
  • In a hot cast iron skillet (a large sauté pan will work too), quickly toast each side of the bread slices. Flip the bread after a minute or so for the perfect crostini.
  • Serve warm or at room temperature.

How to make roast beef crostini

  • Toast the bread ~ In a hot pan, quickly toast slices of a long thin loaf that are brushed with extra virgin olive oil and sprinkled with kosher salt.
  • Mix the horseradish cream ~ In a small bowl, combine the sour cream, mayonnaise, and prepared horseradish.
  • Assemble the roast beef crostini ~ For each beef appetizer, spread some of the horseradish cream on a crostini. Top with a couple arugula leaves, about a half slice of deli roast beef, another dab of the horseradish cream, some shredded Gruyere cheese and diced tomato.

Expert tips

  • Use a thin loaf of bread for the crostini ~ for the perfect 2 bite appetizer, choose a loaf of bread that is about 2 to 3 inches in diameter.
  • Ask the deli counter to thinly slice the roast beef ~ My first choice for the roast beef is medium rare Boar's Head which is available at most deli counters.
  • Substitute your favorite semi hard cheese ~ some tasty choices are pepper jack, Swiss, Gouda and sharp cheddar.
  • Make roast beef crostini in advance ~ There's no need for last minute prep for these easy yet fancy appetizers. Make them up to 2 hours in advance. Store in the refrigerator covered lightly with plastic wrap.
