5 puff pastry cheese twists in a glass.

I was dashing off to a meeting one night last week and had volunteered to bring a snack. I like to bring a crowd favorite like my Italian Sausage Rolls. As I didn't have the sausage on hand, I made an even easier puff pastry recipe.

I grabbed some frozen puff pastry and a jar of everything bagel seasoning from the grocery store. 30 minutes later, I was out the door with a big batch of crispy, salty, garlicky and Parmesan dusted homemade cheese twists.

These easy to make puff pastry breadsticks were such a hit that several people asked for the recipe. So I knew I needed to share it with you too.

Serve immediately ~ These crispy cheese twists are best served as soon as they are made. But they are still delicious if served within a few hours. Store at room temperature.

Refrigerate ~ Store unbaked twists on a covered baking sheet in the refrigerator for up to 1 day. Remove them from the fridge while the oven heats to 400 degrees F. Bake for 15 to 20 minutes, flipping once.

Freeze baked ~Place baked cheese twists in a resealable bag and freeze for up to 1 month. To serve, remove them from the freezer while the oven heats to 375 degrees F. Bake for 3 to 5 minutes.

Freeze unbaked ~ Flash freeze the unbaked twists on a baking sheet for 30 minutes or until firm. Place frozen cheese twists in a resealable bag in the freezer for up to 1 month. To serve, remove them from the freezer while the oven heats to 400 degrees F. Place on a baking sheet and bake for 20 to 25 minutes flipping once. Watch closely toward the end of the baking time so the twists don't burn.

Expert tips

  • It's best to work with cold puff pastry dough. Keep one sheet of the dough in the refrigerator while working with the other sheet.
  • Make sure to generously brush the dough with the egg wash before adding the everything bagel seasoning and Parmesan cheese. The egg helps the ingredients stick to the pastry.
  • Use a rolling pin to gently press the seasoning and cheese to the dough. Don't press down too hard while rolling. The pastry won't fluff up into its signature light and crispy layers while it bakes You can also press down the ingredients with your hand.

Frequently asked questions

Can you make your own puff pastry?

You can, but it is very time consuming. The frozen premade puff pastry is easy to work with and readily available.

How do you thaw puff pastry?

Thaw puff pastry in its packaging for 4 to 6 hours in the refrigerator. If you're in a hurry, thaw the pastry at room temperature for about 20 to 30 minutes.

What do you serve with puff pastry cheese twists?

I love serving these puff pastry twists as a nibble with a glass of wine, as a dipper with my roasted tomato basil soup, alongside this delicious spinach and sausage lasagna, and with chicken, cranberry and pecan salad.
